Georgia: Central Asian Country and Former Soviet State

Georgia's history is marked by a number of invasions by the empires of Rome, Persia, the Ottoman Empire and the Russian. The Roman settlers came around in the early centuries and Christianity became the major religion of Georgia. Georgia came under Russian control in the 19 th century and finally achieved independence in 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The country under the Mikheil Saakashvili dispensation has joined NATO that brought the country into direct conflict with Russia, especially after the abortive attempt in 2008 to prevent South Ossetia's secession.
