JIPMER started on 1 January 1823 by the then French imperial government in India. When Indian government took the administration of this union territory in its hand, the college was renamed "Dhanvantri Medical College" later it was renamed Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research after Jawaharlal Nehru, India?s first prime minister.
