Developed by the Open Handset Alliance, led by Google, and other companies, Android, Inc. was founded in 2003 by Andy Rubin at Palo Alto, California, United States.

Later, the web search giant Google purchased, Android Inc., in 2005 and made it available for use after the formation of Open Handset Alliance, a consortium of 86 hardware, software, and telecommunication companies working continuously for the development of open standards for mobile devices in 2007.

Android has a large community of developers continuously engaged in writing applications primarily in a customized version of Java. These applications can be downloaded from third-party websites or through online stores such as Google Play managed by Google itself.

According to the statistics of 2011, a total number of 500,000 applications were available for Android, with a remarkable number of applications downloaded from the Android Market exceeding 10 million in December 2011 and thus making Android the world leader in smartphone platform.
