Djibouti News: Djibouti lies in northeast Africa on the Gulf of Aden and due to its conical shape it is often referred as the ?Horn of Africa?. The nomadic tribes Afars and the Issas originally inhabited Djibouti. In 1862, the French signed a treaty with the Afar leaders and gave them land on the northern coast. During the rest of the 19th century Djibouti associated with France and in the 1945 it became the France Overseas Territory. In 1977, the French withdrew due to international pressure and Djibouti achieved independence. The strategic location of Djibouti at the mouth of Red Sea makes it a strategic country in the world geopolitics. During the Gulf War it was the base of operations for the French military. France continues to maintain a significant presence, contributing directly and indirectly to more than half of the Djibouti national income.
