Central African Republic News: The Central African Republic as a land-locked country in Central Africa and highly impoverished and unstable due to decades of civil unrest, military coups since its independence from French rule in 1960 when President David Dacko assumed power but was overthrown in a coup in 1965 by Jean-Bedel Bokassa. The Bokassa era ended when David Dacko again gained power in 1979. The French called the region Ubangi-Shari as it is located in the Ubangi and Shari river basins. In spite of considerable mineral resources and virgin rainforests the country has been unable to move in the path of prosperity and development. Due to the continued violence many of its citizens have migrated to neighbouring Chad in search of food, shelter and livelihood. The Central African Republic is among the ten poorest countries in Africa and one of the poorest in the world.
