Cape Verde is ideally situated on an archipelago off Africa?s west coast. It derives its name from Cabo Verde as given by the Portuguese in 1462. Beginning in 1961 the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) launched a nationalist independence movement to throw off the Portuguese yoke that finally succeeded in 1974. However before that Guinea-Bissau declared independence in 1973 but the two countries share friendly relations till date after initial hiccups.
