Austria in News: Austria was once the center of power of the large Austro-Hungarian Empire but it was reduced to a small republic after suffering defeat in World War I. Austria's annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the victorious Allies in 1945 rendered its status unclear for decades. A State Treaty signed in 1955 ended the previous occupation by allied powers and recognised Austria's independence, which prohibited its unification with Germany. Austria became a member of European Union in 1995. A prosperous, democratic country, Austria entered the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Austria had come to be widely characterized as an island of the blessed because of the prosperity of its people and the virtual absence of social conflict.
