Science city, Nano park, and convention in Bangalore

Aug 23: For the first time in India a convention will be organized on nanotechnology in December 2007 named ‘Bangalore Nano 2007’ by the state partment of IT, biotechnology and science and technology.

To boost the research and development in nanotechnology union budget has also allocated around 1000crores. A research centre would be established in Bangalore with the assistance of centre of Rs. 100 crore.

The conference would provide a meeting ground to researchers, entrepreneurs, industrialists. The theme of the conference would the bridging the research-industry gap in nano-technology. The conference’s focus will be on the integrated role of technology and application and market.

The initiative by the government has been taken in view of the global trade potential of nano technology being around $ 3 trillion by coming ten years.

Another prompting factor is the potential of the technology in bringing ‘societal transformation’ that can improve the life of down-trodden people. This is a glaring aspect of the nanotechnology that it can be used to clean water, in making small solar cells. And the most important use of the technology is in medical arena where nano particles can be used for imaging, DNA diagnostics and in tissue engineering.

This would be a combined effort of Indian Institute of Science and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).

This is not all. A research and application oriented ‘nano park’ will also be established somewhere in between Nagavara and Jakkur on 15 acre plot.

A plan of ‘science city’ has also been announced at Bannerghatta road by the government at a cost of Rs.75 crore along with three regional science centre at Dharwad, Mangalore and Kodagu districts.

Nano technology has vast potential to be used in healthcare, chemical industry, electronics, aerospace and defence and nuclear fields and the convention to be held in December will ponder over the same.
