53rd National Film Award: Big B and Sarika win top honour

Aug 08: After a long waiting, Information and Broadcast ministry has announced the 53 rd National Film Award for the year 2005-2006 on Tuesday in New Delhi. Bengali film
50,000 for electing the award of Best Feature Film. Amitabh Bachchan has been declared the Best Actor for his outstanding performance in Black while Sarika bagged the Best Actress award for the Parzania (English), a social film in English based on the Gujarat rites.
The awards had been finalised almost a year before, but the official announcement held on Tuesday as Bombay High Court had stayed the decision. The court has lifted the decision last week, this cause the official announcement of this award.
Best popular film award providing wholesome entertainment went to Rang De Basanti (Hindi), directed by Rakesh Omprakash Mehra, while Riding Solo to the Top of The World directed by Gaurav A. Jani won the Best film award for the non-feature film category.
The Blue Umbrella by Vishal Bharadwaj won the Swarna Kamal for the best children's film whearas Kannada film Thutturi got the award for the best film on environment conservation.
Nargis Dutt Award for the Best Feature Film on National Integration went to Daivanamathil (Malayalam), directed by Jayaraj whereas Iqbal (Hindi) by Nagesh Kukunoor has been declared the best film on social issues and Naseeruddin Shah got the Best Supporting Actor award for this film. The award for Best Film on Family Welfare went to Thavamai Thavamiranthe (Tamil).
Indira Gandhi Award for the Best First Film of a Director went to a film Parineeta (Hindi), directed by Pradeep Sarkar and Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra while critics award for the best film went to Baradwaj Rangan whereas Black by Sanjay Leela Bhansali got the best feature film award in Hindi.
Anupam Kher has got a Special Jury Award for his excellent performance in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahin Mara. Urvashi for her Malayalam film Achhuvinte Amma won the Best Supporting Actress award. Rahul Dholakia bagged Best Direction award for his social film Parzania. Only one award has been shared, it was Best Costume Design that went to Anna Singh for Taj Mahal - An Eternal Love Story and Sabyachi Mukherjee for Black.

Bombay High Court had directed the DFFI to consider uncensored films for the competition as documentary filmmakers Anand Patwardhan, Gautam Jani and Simantini Dhuru had filed a petition in court asking for exemption for their films from obtaining censor board certification.
