Controversial RJD MP Pappu Yadav gets life imprisonment in Ajit Sarkar murder case. Sarkar a CPI (M) leader from the Purnia district of Bihar was killed almost a decade back.

A special CBI court while hearing the case also sentenced two other Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD) activists: Rajan Tiwari and Anil Yadav wh rigorous life-term for such heinous murder of the communist leader.

Surendar Prasad Yadav aka Ajit Sarkar an influential trade union leader and two-time Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Purnia was gunned down on June 14, 1998 what is supposed be the outcome of a political rivalry of Madhepura with Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav.

The trial of the case began on August 2002 but the Patna High Court later set a deadline for the court to speed up the trial and end it by January 31, though the HC later itself extended the deadline by two weeks.

The CBI in its May 10, 1999 chargesheet accused five persons in connection with the murder including Pappu Yadav, Rajan Tiwari, Anil Yadav, Harish Chaudhary and Amar Yadav.

In fact CBI named the possible involvement of Papu Yadav and other two on the basis of Tiwari’s statement after Delhi police in another case arrested him.

Harish Chaudhary and Amar Yadav are still absconding while Pappu Yadav was arrested in March 2004 in connection with the murder case.

Now both Tiwari and Anil Yadav are lodged in Patna’s Beur Jail whereas Pappu Yadav on February 2005 was transferred to Delhi’s Tihar Jail after the Supreme Court’s directive regarding an objection to the luxury treatment being provided to him there. Meanwhile, the lawyers of the three-sentenced convicts have decided to appeal against the verdict.

This is the second major judgement against a strong political leader in Bihar after another RJD MP Mohammed Shahabuddin has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a kidnapping of a political activist in 1999.

This certainly engenders hope among the masses to have faith in our justice system after it has come out with the right verdict despite the lawlessness in the state.
