Realisation of her services by government surpass time: Kiran Bedi

Dec 20: The first woman IPS officer is adamant on her decision of retirement voluntarily though the government is unwilling to accept her request rather trying to retain her services with added resnsibilities.

Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta said on Wednesday, “We have decided to put a big new responsibility on your shoulders and that means anchoring the National Police Mission, Where she is Director General now” while addressing the Foundation Day Celebrations of Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D).

Gupta also commended the work done by the Bureau under Bedi’s leadership and praised the brave heart officer for initiating a number of new projects.

However Bedi said in reply, “My decision for taking VRS stand.” Further added that, “She is now looking forward to work with the government and not for the government,” while talking to the reporters.

“I am grateful for the recognition. However I am looking forward to the acceptance of my retirement proposal by the government”, said Bedi.

“If I was dispensable for one job, I think I am dispensable for the another job too,” Bedi reacted on the government proposal that clearly indicates her irk over being jolted out by Y S Dadwal, two years junior to her, for the post of Delhi’s police commissioner in July.

However Gupta did not make it clear in his speech whether government is willing to put added responsibility on Bedi’s shoulder while retaining her in services or utilize her services after accepting her VRS application, which she had forwarded about a month ago.

Union Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta and National Security Adviser MK Narayan both made hard attempt to entice Bedi back by praising her for selfless services to the nation and her leadership qualities.

But all that appreciation did not work good for the Secretary and the Adviser as Bedi said she was glad that her leadership qualities realised by them but their realization came very late.

The Magsaysay Awardees police officer had put in her papers seeking voluntary retirement, almost two years ahead of her superannuation to “focus on her social work commitments and academics.”

The decision had come after she expressed disappointment over denial of the post of Delhi Police Commissioner to her and was appointed Y S Dadwal, two years junior to her.
