A P J Abdul Kalam to dedicate state of art cancer centre

Dec 07:  Former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam a great visionary will be there to inaugurate state of art Father Muller Oncology Centre at Mangalore on December 9.

Equipped with all sensitive and advance instruments this centre will serve the surmounting pressure of cancer patients.

A unit of Father Muller’s Charitable Institutions with a status of Religious Minority Educational Institute is open for all religious community irrespective.

Fr Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI) Director Rev Fr Patrick Rodrigues said the facility is equipped with a linear accelerator, which will be attached to the CT Scan and Open MRI for accurate location of the tumour. “It will have highly sophisticated ‘Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)’ and floor based Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) which is the first to be installed in India.”

He informed that a gastroscopy camp conducted at the hospital recently detected five persons with cancer out of 172 participants in the camp and that a total of 600 cancer cases have been detected since last month at the hospital itself.

He talked about the need for awareness among the public about affordable prevention and screening methods.

Dr Suresh Rao, Head of oncology centre said that present approach to cancer care is to reduce the side effects to the minimum by using all the modalities with less aggression.

Hospital has also established a cancer fund for poor patients, there are also fund available for cancer, renal failure and bypass surgeries.

The minimum cost of cancer treatment will be between Rs 8,000 and Rs 16,000 which is far lower than other hospitals where the treatment for same costs around Rs 70,000.

These medical facilities created for cancer patient will add a new chapter in their life with much subsidised cost of treatment.
