Vishwaranjan called back as Chhattisgarh police chief

National, Wed, 20 May 2009 IANS

Raipur, May 20 (IANS) Chhattisgarh's Director General of Police Vishwaranjan, who was forced to go on leave in April by the poll panel, has been called back Wednesday by the state's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government hours after the election code of conduct restrictions were lifted.

Vishwaranjan, who was additional director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), took charge as police chief of the state in July 2007. He had developed differences with the Election Commission in November last year following his interview to the media regarding security arrangements for the state's assembly polls.

When the election code of conduct was announced for the Lok Sabha polls in March the Election Commission asked Vishwaranjan to go on leave and appointed Anil Navaney as police chief. The state went to polls in the first phase April 16.

Official sources said the government wanted to reinstate Vishwaranjan in wake of rising Maoist violence in the state and police failure to handle the insurgents since Vishwaranjan was forced to go on leave.
