Few more challenges for Bangladesh

Dhaka, Mon, 04 Aug 2008 Kazi Mohoshin Al Abbas

Again, few more challenges are emerging for the military backed interim government of Bangladesh. On Aug 04, 2008, first step of local government poll is to be held under tight security measure. In the meantime, political parties are in a process to press government for total withdrawal of the state of emergency. Along with these two issues government should have enough preparation to fulfill the commitments come out from the 15th SAARC summit. If the government is not able to handle the issues properly that could show the way of a socio-political unevenness, political observers assumed.

Many of the political observers predicted that the election of 4 City Corporations and 9 Municipalities are the acid test for the interim government and the Election Commission (EC) as well. The election is going to be held under a state of emergency. If this election failed to appear as a successful initiative to the people, politician and international observers; government and EC will be in a great trouble to go for any other initiatives for any election. In this view, observers said that August 4 election must be an accepted one to all stakeholders. In fact, it is the most important challenge for EC Roadmap, which is sketched to fold up with in December 2008.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and their partners, i.e. the four-party alliance declared a nation wide program demanding the immediate release of Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister and Chairperson of the party, and her elder son Tareque Rahman who is also the senior joint secretary of BNP; both of them are in detention for graft charges.

It is a significant development in BNP and four-party alliance, because this is the immediate past alliance in power, able to come out with a nationwide program ever after giving up power to the interim government. Political Analysts said that the alliance was shattered like a glass-house in earth quack after One/Eleven situation. BNP was broken into two pieces after January 11, 2007, and the most important alley of the party, Jamate Islami Bangladesh was maintaining a distance as corruption cases were filing against the leaders of the alliances. In consideration to this situation today’s four-party alliance is as better as they are able to observe a nationwide program. If government is not able to manage BNP, any initiative has taken for an acceptable election would be ineffective some thing.

Same thing could be told on Bangladesh Awami League (AL). Zillur Rahman, acting president of AL and other heavy weights of 14-party alliance are demanding bail for Sheikh Hasina, another former Prime Minister and President of AL, permanently. Presently she is in North America for medical treatment and other personal causes. AL led political alliance is also demanding total withdrawal of emergency. AL is also observing nationwide programs in a mild form including symbolic day-long hunger strike.

Analysts said that there is no possibility of street agitation in near future. Rather politicians are intending to solve all issues through dialogue and discussion.

Fulfilling minimum demands of political parties is essential for the interim government to manage them, other wise a bottleneck could be emerged in the improvement process of political loggerhead. If political parties, the main stockholders of election, are not treated properly the process started on August 4 could be fallen into problems, hence overcoming all obstacles is another challenge for the caretaker government.

August 3, was the last day of the 15th SAARC Summit, which was in session in Colombo, the capital city of Sri Lanka. The leaders of eight member countries have made commitment to fight terrorism, hunger, adverse impact on environment and many more for the betterment of the people of the region. It would be difficult to fulfill the commitments if the governments of respective countries have less support to them.

In Bangladesh, interim government needs to have plenty of support from people in this regard. Support is related to the commitment the government and EC made to the people. Again government needs to overcome the challenge of obtaining support from people for regional causes, the analysts mentioned.
