UPA leads over NDA in Lok Sabha battle

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS) India's ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) was Saturday ahead of the main opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the race for power as counting of the votes polled in the Lok Sabha elections began early morning.

 

According to Election Commission officials, the Congress-led UPA was leading in 52 of the 129 Lok Sabha seats where counting trends were available. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA was ahead in 44 seats.

 

 

Candidates of the Third Front, made up of the Communists and regional parties, were ahead of others in 28 seats while the Samajwadi Party was on the winning track in five seats, all in Uttar Pradesh.

 

 

Political pundits have predicted a badly hung 545-member Lok Sabha. Most of the results are expected by midday.
