Chennai, May 13 (IANS) Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday expressed confidence that the Congress-DMK combine would emerge victorious in the general elections in Tamil Nadu. His son Karti Chidambaram, who was attacked Tuesday night, said the opposition was 'frustrated' since it faces sure defeat.
'The poll results in Tamil Nadu will undoubtedly be the crowning glory of the Congress-DMK combine's continuing endeavours. While I am sure of my victory, our front will certainly do very well,' Chidambaram told reporters in Sivaganga after casting his vote.
The minister is hoping for a sixth consecutive win from the Sivaganga parliamentary constituency, about 350 km south of here.
A group of men Tuesday night smashed the windscreen of his son's car and threw stones at the vehicle. While Karti escaped unhurt, his driver sustained injuries.
'The murderous attack using heavy clubs and large stones is ample evidence of our alliance's impending victory and the opposition's frustration at its imminent defeat,' Karti told IANS on phone from Sivaganga.
Police said AIADMK legislator Gunasekharan and 20 others have been charged with unlawful assembly and causing public disturbance for their alleged involvement in the attack on Karti.
'We demand immediate action against the AIADMK assailants by the Election Commission. Chidambaram's political opponents have obviously attacked Karti due to their fear of losing the polls,' said Congress legislative party leader D. Sudarsanam.
Polling was underway in all 39 seats of Tamil Nadu in the fifth and final phase of general elections Wednesday.
Union minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan, who is contesting the polls from the textile town of Eroda, echoed Chidambaram's confidence of a Congress-DMK win.
'I am not surprised by the long queue of voters. Casual chats with the voters have indicated our combine will win by a huge margin,' Elangovan told reporters after casting his vote in Erode.
