Eight additional observers for Bengal polls

Kolkata, May 11 (IANS) The Election Commission has appointed eight additional observers for 11 West Bengal Lok Sabha constituencies which go to the hustings in the final phase of elections in the state May 13.

 

The observes will be posted in Barrackpore seat in North 24 Parganas, and Joynagar, Mathusapur, Jadavpore and Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas, Chief Electoral Officer Debasish Sen said.

 

 

Altogether 250 companies of central police forces, and another 200 companies of state armed police personnel will be on duty to ensure free and fair polls, he said.

 

 

Fifty companies of the central forces will be pressed into service in Kolkata, and 100 companies each in the adjoining districts of South and North 24 Parganas.

 

 

Quick response teams, heavy radio squads will also be deployed, and check posts set up at ferryghats, railway stations and bridges.

 

 

As a precautionary measure, warehouses, guest houses and hotels were being checked, he said.
