Japan catches flu from Canada

Asia, Sun, 10 May 2009 IANS

Toronto, May 10 (IANS) The human swine flu has spread from Canada to Japan via three Japanese who went back home from here Thursday.

The three Japanese - a 46-year-old teacher and two 16-year-old students who returned from a school trip to Canada - tested positive for the virus on their way back home, reports here said.

The teacher and the boy students had stayed at Oakville near Toronto from April 24 till May 7. They showed symptoms of the flu during the flight and tested positive in a preliminary test on the plane.

They have been quarantined at Tokyo airport, reports said.

Canada authorities, who confirmed the country's first swine flu death Friday, reported 28 more case of the virus. This brings total infections to 280, with Toronto and Vancouver areas accounting for most of the cases.

Having borne the brunt of the SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) pandemic in 2003 which killed 44 people in Toronto, Canadians are tackling the virus outbreak virtually on a war footing.
