CPI-M top brass takes on Mamata on her home turf

National,Politics, Sat, 09 May 2009 IANS

Kolkata, May 9 (IANS) Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leaders, including general secretary Prakash Karat, are concentrating their election campaign in Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's Kolkata South constituency which goes to the polls Wednesday.

Four politburo members of the party are virtually camping in the constituency as part of a last-minute blitz against the state's main opposition leader.

While state Industries Minister Nirupam Sen took part in a procession Saturday morning, Karat is scheduled to attend two meetings in the constituency in the evening.

On Sunday, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will address two public meetings at Behala and Kasba. State CPI-M secretary Biman Bose will also hold meetings in the area Monday, the last day of campaigning.

Analysts feel that the CPI-M tactic is designed at swaying the undecided voters with a high-pitched campaign in the closing hours.

But Mamata seemed unfazed.

'It's good they are coming. I will ask my party workers to welcome them with tea. At least these leaders will understand how it feels like in the open away from air-conditioned chambers,' she said.

'Let them come. But I will be busy campaigning elsewhere. Because that's what my constituency's people want me to do.'
