India to witness solar eclipse

A total eclipse, in which the Sun is completely blotted out, will be visible on Friday (August 1) afternoon in parts of the world but people of India are expected to witness a partial eclipse.


The total solar eclipse, will be seen in other parts of the world including northern and eastern parts of North America, Greenland, Russia, and northern Europe.

According to the experts of Nehru Planetarium, the eclipse will be visible in India as a partial one, but, it can be observed more articulately from the northern parts of India and north-east India while its maximum belt can be seen in Sib Sagar region of Assam.

The Planetarium has also organised workshop considering the excitement among people and children to watch the eclipse safely. The organisation has prearranged several resources including equipments and gadgets to observe and measure the activities related to eclipse.

The workshop will look at providing school children possible safe methods of observing eclipses using pinhole cameras, binocular box projections, projection using a small telescope, and imaging the eclipsed sun using digital cameras and webcams.

As per information, the eclipse can be observed in national capital region during 4.03 pm and 5.56 pm. The timings for cities like Bangalore is between 4.42 pm and 6.07 pm on Friday while for Mumbai the phenomenon will be witnessed 4.27 and 6.03 pm and for Chennai it is between 4.40 pm and 6.07 pm.

Both astrologers and scientists have reiterated the fact that it will be dangerous to view the natural but rare happenings with naked eyes. Astrologers have their own logic behind the impact of eclipse on human health and life cycle.

Meanwhile, NASA, the US space agency has arranged live telecast of the celestial event. Viewers can catch the moments on NASA TV or by logging on to www.Nasa.Gov.
