Former Test player Ashok Vinoo Mankad dead

Mumbai, Aug 1 (ANI): Former Test player Ashok Vinoo Mankad died in his sleep at his Worli residence here this morning. He was 61.

 

A right-handed batsman, Mankad played for India in 22 Tests.

 

He was the eldest son of the Vinoo Mankad who represented India in 44 Test matches. His brothers Rahul Mankad and Atul Mankad were also first class cricketers.

 

He started as a middle-order batsman, making his debut against New Zealand in 1969. Later, he opened the innings.

 

Mankad made an impact against Bill Lawry's Australians the same season, compiling four half-centuries. His 97 in the third Test in New Delhi, also his highest Test score, helped India to square the series 1-1.

 

After he stopped playing, Mankad served as a coach for many Ranji Trophy teams.

 

The Indian team, which is Sri Lanka in Galle is wearing black arm-bands as a mark of respect to Mankad. (ANI)
