Lucknow, May 6 (IANS) A team of doctors performed a marathon 12-hour surgery to remove a three-foot-long rod from a 60-year-old truck driver's chest, officials said Wednesday.
The iron rod pierced Shivanand's chest when his vehicle collided with a stationary truck in the Mohanlalganj locality in the wee hours of Tuesday.
'The truck carrying iron rods was on the roadside without any back light and indicators and Shivanand rammed into it,' police Inspector Dharmpal Singh told reporters.
The accident took place in front of a Border Security Force camp and the troopers, along with the police, rescued Shivanand after an effort of nearly three hours.
'We cut the rod but a piece of about three feet in length still pierced his left chest. He was immediately rushed to the trauma centre of the Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Medical University early Tuesday morning,' Singh said.
A team of 11 doctors operated on Shivanand to remove the rod.
'Besides his left lung, the collar bone was also damaged at a number of places and the rod was dangerously close to the heart. However, the heart was safe but a lot of blood was lost due to bleeding,' Said Suresh, a doctor who lead the team.
'Three junior doctors assisting the team also donated blood,' Suresh told IANS.
'There was a large amount of blood clotting in his lungs which was removed by corrective surgery. We made space near the collar bone and left shoulder and successfully removed the road. He is out of danger and will recover soon,' the doctor said.
