Gandhinagar, May 5 (IANS) The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team probing the 2002 communal violence in Gujarat will have its 'witness protection plan' in place within two days, SIT chief R.K. Raghavan said here Tuesday.

'We will have the witness protection plan ready in the next two days and we will set an example for everybody on how to protect witnesses with our plan,' Raghavan, a former Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) chief, told reporters.

He said the Supreme Court had instructed the SIT to investigate the possible role of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, his cabinet collegues and others in the violence that claimed 1,180 lives.

The apex court last week ordered for setting up of six fast-track courts for the trial of 10 key cases of violence and for providing protection to the witnesses.

The SIT chief was in Gandhinagar to discuss various aspects of the court order, including selecting lawyers for the fast-track courts.
