Court convicts Telgi and four others in fake stamp paper scam

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) A city court Saturday convicted Abdul Karim Telgi and four others in a fake stamp paper scam of Rs.257,000. Telgi has been convicted in two more cases pertaining to the nation-wide racket.

 

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjay Bansal held Telgi guilty after he deposed before the court via teleconferencing from a jail in Bangalore. The case was registered in the Defence Colony police station here.

 

 

The court will pronounce sentence May 5.

 

 

Telgi has been charged under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 258 (sale of counterfeit stamp) 259 (having possession of counterfeit government stamp), 260 (using fake stamp with knowledge) 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and section 69 of the Stamp Act.

 

 

Last month, a special sessions court in Bangalore had sentenced Telgi to seven years' rigorous imprisonment and fined him Rs.125,000 in another case of the fake stamp paper racket.

 

 

Telgi was also sentenced in June 2007 to 13 years in jail with a fine of Rs.2.02 billion by a special court for Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA).
