Bangalore, April 30 (IANS) No ballot was cast in five polling stations in Karnataka Thursday as the electorate refused to vote to protest non-implementation of development works and rehabilitation package, an Election Commission official said.
The polling stations were spread across three of the 11 Lok Sabha constituencies where voting was held Thursday in Karnataka.
'Nil voting was reported from three polling stations in Mandya, one each from Bagalkot and Udupi-Chikmagalur parliamentary constituencies. The voters refused to cast the ballot as a mark of protest over non-implementation of development works,' state chief electoral officer M.N. Vidyashankar told reporters.
In one polling station at Haganur in Badami assembly segment of Bagalkot, voters kept away in protest against non-implementation of a rehabilitation package for people displaced from the Almatti dam area.
Similarly, at Kenchapura in Tarekare assembly segment of Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, no voter turned up in one polling station.
In Mandya, not a single voter turned up at polling stations at Melkote, Ballenhalli and Gubbahalli in K.R. Pete assembly segment, in protest against the delay in completing civic and irrigation projects in their areas.
Incidentally, the provisional voting percentage in the final phase at 60.31 was more than in the first phase held April 23 at 54.6 percent in 17 of the 28 parliamentary constituencies in the state.
'In the three Maoist-affected constituencies of Dakshina Kannada, Shimoga and Udupi-Chikmagalur in the state, polling was peaceful and heavy in 165 polling stations held under tight security,' Vidyashankar said.
About 70 percent voting was recorded in 23 polling stations located in Maoist-affected areas in Dakshina Kannada, 60.3 percent in 43 polling stations in Shimoga and 64.10 percent in 99 polling stations in Udupi-Chikmagalur, officials said.
