Website to inform on issues of cyber threats

In a bid to protect Internet users from rising cyber threats, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) Wednesday launched an informative website ‘secureyourpc.in’ in collaboration with software giant Microsoft.

The newly launched website contains vital information to protect the Internet users especially children, women and businessmen who are on higher risk zone from online threats.

India that has the largest number of youth population in the world is at high risk, as teens use Internet frequently and most of them without any security shield.

“The more you use cyberspace, the more you become vulnerable to online threats,” R. Chandrashekhar, Special Secretary in the Ministry of Information Technology, said after launching the website.

The personal data, business data and other secret information can be accessed easily from the database server, if security measures would not be followed. The hacker can used those data in wrong way that can be extremely harmful to the user.

“The issue of online safety and security is becoming more pivotal. So far, it has affected the banking sector and now it’s also affecting other sectors,” CERT director general Gulshan Rai said.

The businesspersons usually face such problems from phishing sites those are being created outside the country and at present one of the biggest threats.

Describing the importance of the launched website, Shyamal Ghosh, the Chairman of the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) said “Several recent cases, related to instances of data theft, hacking and harassment of internet users, are a problem that is growing day by day. www.secureyourpc.in would help use internet in a safer environment.”

The Department of Information Technology had set up CERT to address issues related to online threats and crimes.

The team of the website asked the need to create a greater awareness for the website to provide maximum benefit of this project.

They also advocated stricter laws to minimize cyber crimes and urged the government to make amendments in the IT Act to give more teeth to it.
