Sep 17: Fatigue is a common health ailment with a symptom of weariness, tiredness, exhaustion or lethargy. A person with fatigue filled tired all the time, feel difficulty in concentration, moodiness, irritability and poor motivation level.

R Earlier researchers in the U.

S. believed that fatigue might be linked to a common stomach virus. The confirmation of which may lead to treating this ailment. Enterovirus have been linked with this ailment several time before.

The research led by Dr. John Chia, an infectious disease specialist at Torrance, California and his son Andrew Chia examined 165 participants diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

The stomach tissue was taken from the patient as well as from healthy people and was put to analysis. The result confirmed the presence of viral capsid protein-1, Enterovirus RNA and culturable virus in the CFS suffering patient, 82% of the participants with CFS were tested positive for virus while only 20% of the normal found to be positive for virus in their stomach cells.

Hence it was concluded from the findings that Enterovirus is responsible for the CFS and abdominal complaint. The study is published in the online issue of the Journal of Clinical Pathology.

The Enteroviruses are class of virus that infect gastrointestinal and respiratory system. The report published by European researchers of the presence of Enterovirus in the muscle, brain, heart and central nervous system of patient suffering from CFS prompted him to look for Enterovirus in the gastrointestinal tract. Dr.Chia said that it is the flourishing Enterovirus in the cell, which did not destroy but protect the Enterovirus from the attacks of patient immune system, which is triggered to destroy it. This continuous fight between the immune system and the cell-protecting virus caused pain and fatigue.

Dr. Nancy Klimas, director of the Gulf War Illness Center at the VA Medical Center and professor of medicine at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, said that Dr. Chia’s success lay in the fact; he was studying the gastrointestinal tract, an area others had failed to look at.

Other researchers used to trace these viruses in the blood stream unlike Chia, who looked in the gastrointestinal tract.

Dr. Chia said that this result would pave the way for the researchers to develop effective medication for CFS patient.

This findings will be a great help for those who live their life in stress and faces problem in day-to-day life due to fatigue.
