Poll panel to look into Trinamool candidate's hate remarks

National, Mon, 27 Apr 2009 IANS

Kolkata, April 27 (IANS) The Election Commission will look into the alleged hate remarks of Trinamul Congress candidate Kalyan Bandopadhyay against West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.

State chief elctoral officer Debasish Sen told reporters Monday the Election Commission has already been sent a video footage of the interview in which Bandopadhyay had made the remarks.

However, the state electoral office was yet to receive any feedback from the poll panel.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) had lodged the complaint with the Election Commission over Bandopadhyay's comment.

Bandopadhyay, contesting from Sreerampore seat in Hooghly district, said since Bhattacharjee is not a candidate he has not violated the model code of conduct for the polls through his comments against the chief minister.

Meanwhile, Sen said 368 candidates - 29 of them women - will be in fray in the three-phase Lok Sabha election in the state scheduled for April 30, May 7 and 13.
