Labour Party's fortune doomed with or without Brown

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

London, July 30 (ANI): British citizens have said that they will not vote for the ruling Labour Party even if MPs remove Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

A poll on Tuesday showed that barely half of Britons think dumping Brown will boost Labour's flagging fortunes.

The news came as ministers prepared a mass resignation in a desperate bid to unseat the Prime Minister and save their jobs.

Bookies said that the double blow makes it even less likely that Brown can win another term, the Daily Star reported.

Yesterday 10 junior ministers were understood to be planning to quit in a mass resignation before the Labour conference in September.

They want cabinet ministers David Miliband and Alan Johnson to team up as a leadership "dream ticket".

But last night one party insider warned: "If they take over they're almost certain to lose the next election and what good would that do them?"

Ladbrokes has made Foreign Secretary Miliband the 5-2 favourite to be PM, ahead of Minister for Justice Jack Straw at 3-1 and Health Secretary Johnson at 5-1.

One possible contender, Harriet Harman, was last night forced to deny plotting against Brown.

She also rejected reports she had been overheard telling supporters: "This is my moment."

"I am not preparing the ground for a leadership election," Harman said. (ANI)
