IPL should not be a problem for voters: SA Electoral Commission

Africa, Tue, 21 Apr 2009 IANS

Johannesburg, April 21 (IANS) As the general and provincial elections start here Wednesday, South Africa's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has warned Indian Premier League (IPL) organisers to ensure that the match in Cape Town does not pose a problem to voters in an election booth adjacent to the Newlands stadium.

Bangalore Royal Challengers will face Deccan Chargers Wednesday afternoon at the Newlands Stadium, which is adjacent to the polling station Groote Schuur Primary School.

During the opening games of the IPL in Cape Town at the weekend, the Groote Schuur Primary School served as a parking area for fans and the entrance was often blocked off.

'IEC offices in the Western Cape Province has warned IPL organisers that voters must have free access to the polling station Wednesday,' the Afrikaans daily Beeld reported here Tuesday.

The IEC said access to any voting station may not be blocked, while it also made a call on cricket lovers to remember to cast their vote Wednesday either before or after the game. Polling stations will remain open from 7:00 a.m. to 21:00 p.m. (South Africa standard time).

Coincidentally the IPL was moved out of India due to the general elections there.
