Srinagar, July 28 (ANI): An Army jawan was killed on Monday as Pakistani troops opened fire on Indian positions in Nowgaon sector of Kupwara district near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, army sources said.

The sources said heavy fire from across the LoC started at around 3.30 p.m. at Khayan in Nowgam sector.

An Army jawan from 22nd Rajput battalion has been killed so far, the sources said.

According to reports, Indian troops retaliated the heavy firing with small arms fire.

Earlier, Pakistani Army asked for Indian Observation post to be vacated.

This is the first violation of ceasefire between India and Pakistan in Nowgam sector. Violations had been reported in Tangdhar, Poonch and Rajouri sectors of the state earlier this year.

India and Pakistan had agreed to a ceasefire along the international border and LoC in 2003.

After the report of transgression, Army spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel A.K. Mathur confirmed violation along the LoC. (ANI)
