Amritsar, April 19 (ANI): With the festivity surrounding parliamentary elections across the country at a high, several contestants in Punjab are ensuring voters' support with liquor distribution through the backdoor.

Punjab's 'Idiots' Club', known for its humour-cum-satirical approach on important developments that affect comman men's life, recently put up a street show to highlight what's happening in gross violation of Code of Conduct and despite police presence.

"Though the government has failed to provide proper places like sports clubs or other venues of entertainment or institutes for technical education, it has never missed any opportunity to open local liquour outlets in villages here," said Rikki, the President of the Idiots' Club.

Manoj Aggarwal, one of the Idiots, said: " There is a growing number of unemployed persons who are in such a situation courtesy government's policies such as providing the liquor at almost every nook and corner of the city."

In Punjab's rural areas free distribution of all kind of drugs and liquor is common.

Drive against this evil has not remained limited to the police, the "Idiots" of the Idiot club of Raiya, nearly 40km from Amritsar started a drive to curb the influence of the use of money and liquor during the election.

On Saturday, the Idiots' Club organised a street play in which a distillery for preparing country made liquour was inaugurated in one of the rural areas of Amritsar district. A rally was also taken out in the streets of the village in which slogans like "Jai Murakh" (long live idiots) and "vote for Idiots" were raised.

Members of the Idiots' Club wanted to create awareness among rural areas against this evil of liquor. They said the people sould not succumb to any temptation and exercise their franchise to elect the best candidate in the fray.

Rajinder Rikhi, the President of the Idiots' Club, said: that people should understand that for a day's allurement they would suffer for five years. By Ravinder Singh Robin (ANI)
