Floods wreak havoc in Bihar

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Kusheshwar (Bihar), July 28 (ANI): Rise in water levels in Kosi, Bhagmati and Kamla rivers following heavy rains has devastated several villages in Bihar.

Villages in Kusheshwar in Darbhanga region have been submerged in water bringing life to a standstill.

Marooned people in the region are struggling to hold on to whatever little remains with them, after most of their belongings have been washed away by the floods.

Road links have been damaged cutting off the area from the rest of the state. Residents are facing a hard time as they try to lead their lives amidst chaos.

"All the road links have been destroyed. If somebody falls ill it is difficult to take him or her even to the hospital. There is a fear that the person might die enroute. We are entirely cut off from the rest of the state. It has become difficult to live in such a situation," said Ashok Kumar Yadav, a resident.

Schools, hospitals, police stations have all been inundated with flood water.

"Our school has been flooded with water. There is nobody to look after us. Everybody is fleeing for their lives," said Sumit Kumar Chaudhary, a student.

The provincial authorities claim they are doing their level best to help out the flood victims.

"We have around 3, 000 quintals of food grains in stock. We have got around 400 thousand rupees as grant from the government. We have also got 100 thousand rupees fund which we will use as and when required," said Dhirendra Kumar Jha, Block Divisional Officer.

The state authorities have deployed boats to ferry the people, but their number is insufficient.

Every year, monsoon rains leave a trail of death and destruction across India, yet much of the economy of a largely agricultural region depends on the monsoon. (ANI)
