An 11-year-old student of MCD primary school in Narela in North Delhi, Shanno Khan, who was brutally punished by her teacher, died on Friday afternoon after remaining in coma for over 24 hours. Her class teacher Manju has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
"The accused has not been arrested yet. We will arrest her soon. A case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder has been registered against the teacher after the death of the girl," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Atul Katiyar.
He said that they had confirmed from various sources that the child faced corporal punishment and investigations are on.
The principal and the teacher have been suspended. Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra has asked the Director of Primary Education to conduct an inquiry into the shocking incident and submit a report within three days.
The incident occurred on Thursday when Shanno Khan was beaten by her class teacher and made stand in the sun for over two hours just for not doing homework. Unable to stand the heat, the 11-year-old girl fainted and fell unconscious.
Shanno's younger sister, who studies in the same school, informed her mother Rihanna, who took her daughter to Maharshi Valmiki Hospital. Gauging her critical condition, doctors shifted Shanno to the pediatric ICU of the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital yesterday afternoon.
"The child was admitted in with severe seizure and her condition further deteriorated before she slipped into a coma. She was shifted to LNJP in critical condition," said Dr. K K Deuri, medical superintendent of Maharshi Valmiki hospital.
National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) condemned the incident articulating a "sad and barbaric act".
The incident got heated with the Federal Minister for Women and Child Development Renuka Chowdhury saying strict action will be taken against the school authorities. Corporal punishment is banned in India.
"What a terrible tragedy. How sad that an innocent child had to die like this. It is high time we take cognizance of such incidents," she said raising concern over such increasing incidents.
