President Pratibha Patil issued notification on Friday for the filing of nominations for the fifth and final phase of Lok Sabha elections covering 86 constituencies across seven states and two Union Territories.
Elections will be held in this phase in all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, 14 in Uttar Pradesh (80), 11 in West Bengal (42), nine in Punjab (13), all five in Uttarakhand, all four in Himachal Pradesh, two in Jammu & Kashmir (6), and one each in two UTs — Chandigarh and Puducherry.
The nomination process would end on May 24 and scrutiny of nomination will take place on 25th. Elections will be held on May 13 and the result of the Lok Sabha elections will be declared on May 16.
Some of the well-known faces whose fate would be sealed in EVMs in this phase are BJP candidate Varun Gandhi (Pilibhit), his mother Maneka Gandhi (Aonla), former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, who is contesting from Moradabad on a Congress ticket and Samajwadi Party’s Jaya Prada (Rampur), BJP’s Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi from Rampur — all these in Uttar Pradesh, among others.
First Phase Polls:
The Naxal hit first phase of elections yesterday which began of dull note finally recorded nearly 60 per cent polling conducted in 15 states and two Union Territories. A total of 19 people, including 5 poll officials and 10 security personnel were killed by Naxalites in four states.
Along with 124 Lok Sabha seats, elections were also held for 70 Assembly seats in Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
While 48 per cent turnout was recorded in Bihar, 86 per cent people exercised their franchise in Lakshadweep. The turnout was around 60 per cent in Kerala where elections held for all 20 seats.
In Orissa, 53 per cent polling was recorded and its Kandhamal district where the anti-Christian violence was occurred recorded 65 percent polling, while in the neighbouring Andhara Pradesh the turnout of voters was 65 per cent.
The lowest polling was reported from Uttar Pradesh (48-50%) and Bihar (46%), and the highest turnout of voters was reported from Lakshadweep (86%) and Nagaland (84%).
The polling percentage other states were: Jammu & Kashmir 48, Meghalaya 65, Maharashtra 54, Manipur 67, Mizoram 52, Chhattisgarh 51, Jharkhand 50 and Andaman and Nicobar 62.
