Violence rocks Jammu amid curfew

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Srinagar, July 27 (ANI): Violence rocks Jammu as protesters defy curfew and take to the streets protesting against the revocation of land allotted to Sri Amarnath shrine board on Sunday.

Hundreds of irate protesters of Sri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) took to the street shouting slogans, burnt tyres and held demonstrations.

Agitation in the Hindu-dominated Jammu region continues to get violent with every passing day, as police resort to baton charge and tear gas to control the mob that pelted stones at the security personnel.

The protesters were taken into custody by the police to bring the situation under control. Chaman Lal Gupta, senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was also taken away by the police.

"We had organized a peaceful prayer meeting but the way police has cordoned off the entire area, we have no option but to court arrest. The way Kuldeep committed suicide for a noble cause, I would request the people of Jammu to step up their protests," said Gupta.

The indefinite curfew that was imposed to control violence that erupted following suicide by a youth in the city in protest against the revocation order was lifted on Friday but clamped back on Saturday.

Authorities have extended the curfew till the late night hours of Sunday.

The Jammu and Kashmir government was forced to back down on its decision to transfer 100 acres of forest land in Kashmir to Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) due to week-long protests in predominantly Muslim Kashmir valley. (ANI)
