Maoists attacked BSF camp in Bihar

A day ahead of the first phase of Lok Sabha polls, scores of heavily armed Maoists attacked a Border Security Force (BSF) camp set up for the purpose of ensuring peaceful elections at Dhansha valley in Bihar’s Rohtas district in the wee hours of Wednesday.


As per reports, 11 Maoists have been shot dead and a jawan has been injured. The jawan who received bullet injury has been admitted to nearby hospital. However, police suspects more casualties among the Maoists.

Reinforcements have been rushed and combing operation has been launched to track down the Naxalites. Two air force helicopters are also being used for the tracking propose.

The daring attack took place at around 1:40 am Wednesday. Over 100 Maoists armed with automatic weapons attacked the BSP camp with rocket launchers. BSF jawans retaliated with gunfire that lasted for nearly three-and-half hours.

“Maoists used three rocket launchers. Two launchers failed and one rocket hit a wall,” said Neelmani, Additional Director General of Police.

The BSF camp was set up to ensure peaceful elections in the Naxals-infested Rohtas district in the wake of the boycott call by the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoists (CPI-Maoist).

Most of the Maiosts affected areas in Bihar will go for polls in the first phase tomorrow. Rohtas too will go for polls Thursday, including 12 other districts. Elections in Bihar will be held in four phases- April 16, 23, 30 and May 7.

With the Lok Sabha elections approaching closer Naxals attack has increased in Bihar, Jharkhand and Orissa – the three most Naxal affected states.

On Tuesday, Maoists had set fire the campaign vehicle of JDU candidate Mahabali Singh for the Karakat seat at Karma-Vishnupur village in the Aurangabad district. And a day ago two school buildings in Gaya district and a primary school building in Aurangabad were bombed.

On Sunday night, Maoists had attacked the Asia's largest bauxite mine site NALCO in Orissa’s Koraput district, leaving four jawans and four Naxals killed. The same day more than a 100 Naxals attacked a CRPF patrol in Dantewada district in Chhattisgarh and killed 10 jawans including a deputy commandant.
