Ang Lee gets second Golden Lion at Venice festival

Sep 10 : Venice Film Festival concludes with the controversial judgment as Ang Lee, Taiwanese director bagged his second Golden Lion for the best picture Se, Jie (Lust, Caution). It’s a second year in arrow when an Asian Film won Venice top honour. Still Life directed by Jia Zhangke’s had won the Golden Lion award last year. Se, Jie won the top honour among the 23 films.

A controversy begins when Zhang Yimou, the president of the Jury declared Se, Jie the best film that was earlier not in the list of favorite top 10. But the controversy and the award function are the siblings as it is said.

Se, Jie (Lust, Caution) is an erotic movie that is based on a short story by popular Chinese writer Eileen Chang. The film has many sex scenes that depicted emotional ambiguity, according to Lee, the director of the movie. Se, Jie was shot in the Shanghai studio of Malaysia under ‘Focus feature and River Road Entertainment’ banner. This movie show how a spy (Novice actress Tang Wei plays a resistance spy) gets her target by let using her body during World War –II. Bollywood actor Anupam Kher is also in the star cast in this movie.

Accepting his second top honour, Lee has recalled two great giant Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni who died on July 30 and July 31, when the film was at the edge of completion. Both of them were the part of the moviemaker team. Ang Lee had already won a Golden Lion Award in 2005 for his Brokeback Mountain that also made him a winner of Academy Award in the same year. Lee, who born in Pingtung, Taiwan in 1954 has been living in USA since 1978.

Beside this the jury has declared two special jury award in spite of one to decay the controversy this year. First was I’m not there of Todd Hayne and the second was Abdellatif kechiche’s La graine et le mulet (The Secret of Grain) while the Jury runner up award went to Russian Movie Nikita Mikhalkov.

Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, won a special Golden Lion Award to celebrating his 75th anniversary of the inaugural Venice event in 1932.

Brian De Palma won the Silver Lion award as a best director for his hard-hitting fake Iraq War documentary, Redacted constructed under HDNet Films that tells the story of a group of U.S. soldiers who rape and murder a young Iraqi girl.

The best actor honor went to Brad Pitt for his role as Jesse James in Warner Bros. Pictures' The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and while Cate Blanchett won the best actress award for her portrayal of folk icon Bob Dylan in I'm Not There which will be distributed in the U.S. by the Weinstein Co.

Besides these, another Asian film Zui Yao Yuan de ju Li (The Most Distant Course), won the prize in the Critics' Week sidebar.
