PM likely to visit Kolkata early next month

National,Politics, Mon, 13 Apr 2009 IANS

Berhampur (West Bengal), April 13 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is likely to hold an election meeting in Kolkata to canvass support for the Congress-Trinamool Congress candidates in the Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal.

Disclosing this to reporters here, state Congress president Pranab Mukherjee said though his party has not put up any candidate in Kolkata, the prime minister will address rallies in the metropolis as it was the state's nerve centre.

'We don't have any candidate there. But our poll partner Trinamool has. A main reason for inviting Dr. Singh is that he has run the coalition government in Delhi for the last five years with great ability and efficiency.'

Congress sources said the prime minister could come either May 4 or 5.
