Sep 10: Top seeded Roger Federer lifted the fourth consecutive US open title which was also his 12 th Grand slam taking him closer to Pete Sampras who had won 14 grand slam title in his career.It is the first time since 1996 in the US open singles title, when both the top seeded in Men’s and Women’s won the cup as Justin Henin Hardenne of Belgium won the Women’s single title defeating Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsova in the straight set 6-1, 6-3 on Sep 08.
The Swiss sensational top seeded Federer defeated the very popular Serbian player among the audience Novak Djokovik by 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/2), 6-4. As it was Novak’s first final in any grand slam but he was not enough prepared to defeat Roger, who has lost only two grand slam finals till date.
Federer, 26, equaled to former great tennis icon Roy Emerson who is on the second list after Sampras winning 12 grand slam singles titles. Federer has now surpassed some great tennis personalities include Bjorn Borg, Rod Laver, Andre Aggasi, Jim Conors and Boris Baker.
"I think about it a lot now. To come so close already at my age is so fantastic and I really hope to break it. Don't know how many? but hope more than Pete.", said Roger after winning the tournament. Federer, who loves Wimbledon, said that “Wimbledon championship would be my favorite, but New York has definitely grown on me the last few years”.
On the other hand, YouTube star and comedian in his speech Djokovic, 20, said, “I was doing something wrong in these important moments, and then I missed that shot and I was unlucky. It could have gone anyway” Giving the reason behind his defeat, Novak said, “I think I was mentally weaker today on the important parts than he is mentally stronger”. “My next book is going to be called ‘Seven Set Points” said Djokovik in the comic way.
The match stretched up to five set in which Federer had to work hard to defeat Djokovic who netted a backhand volley to surrender the only break of the last set on Federer's second match point. The match ended after two hours 26 minutes fight in which Novak did 40 unwanted errors.
