Former apex court judge demands ceasefire in Sri Lanka

National, Fri, 10 Apr 2009 IANS

Chennai, April 10 (IANS) Former Supreme Court judge V.R. Krishna Iyer blamed the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers for the 'violent excesses' in the ongoing military offensive in the island nation.

'The beautiful island of Sri Lanka (is) now a criminal field of carnage, butchery and savagery. The Lankan government since its independence (in 1948) has been guilty of discrimination against the Tamil minority (in the island) and the fuel for terrorism by the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam),' Iyer was quoted in a statement by the People's Union for Civil Liberties Friday.

Krishna Iyer demanded immediate suspension of the military operations and ceasefire under international supervision. 'The world around should intervene to see that justice is done,' he said.
