Japan imposes new sanctions on North Korea

London, Fri, 10 Apr 2009 ANI

London, Apr 10 (ANI): Japan has imposed new sanctions on North Korea after international community failed to unite in condemning Pyongyang's missile test.

After a cabinet meeting, the government announced that it was also extending existing regulations on financial transfers for another year.

The new sanctions reduce the amount of money that can be transferred to North Korea without being reported to the Japanese Government from 204,000 pounds to 10 million yen, while travellers will now only be able to take 300,000 yen with them when they go to North Korea, down from one million yen.

"This measure is designed to give us a clear understanding of the flow of funds to North Korea," The Telegraph quoted Chief Cabinet Secretary Takeo Kawamura, as saying.

The ban on North Korean-registered ships docking in Japan has also been extended for another 12 months. (ANI)
