Tue, 01 Jan 2008 ANI

Jammu, July 25 (ANI): Curfew was lifted in Jammu and adjoining areas which witnessed violence during a shutdown called by Shri Amarnath Sangharsh Samiti (SASS) to protest against the alleged suicide by a man over the Amarnath land row.

Authorities had clamped curfew on Thursday in view of high tension following the suicide of an activist of SASS.

The incident triggered off spontaneous protests by the activists of the SASS and other organizations.

At least 27 persons, including 12 cops, were injured as police clashed with protesters during the shutdown.

Samiti activists have been demanding removal of State Governor N.N.Vohra for surrendering the responsibility of running the affairs of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board to the Government and for returning forestland that was meant for the board.

The State Government on July 1 had revoked its order for transferring land to the SASB by taking over the responsibilities of taking care of Amarnath pilgrims. (ANI)
