London, April 8 (IANS) Michael Vaughan's return to form will be crucial to England in the forthcoming Ashes series, feels captain Andrew Strauss.
'If Vaughan is scoring runs and -playing well it will be a massive bonus for us to have him in the side, there is no doubt about that,' Strauss said.
'He is a quality performer in Test cricket and he's shown that a number of times. If he scores enough runs for him to feel at the top of his game and for the selectors to feel that too, then the experience he brings will have a massive effect on the side,' Strauss was quoted as saying in the English media Wednesday.
Vaughan scored just 40 runs in five Test innings against South Africa last summer. But the former England captain is likely to be ushered back into the national team in time to play Australia in June, if he score sufficient runs for Yorkshire in the County Championship.
'He knows what he has to do. There are other candidates for that spot in the side, including the guys who played this winter. There is competition there and that is a healthy thing.'
