Centre's different note on Sethusamudram Issue

New Delhi, Thu, 24 Jul 2008 NI Wire

Pointing finger on the entity of Rama in its affidavit submitted to the Supreme Court last year, the Central Government now has changed its perception regarding Rama, Ramayan and Ram Sethu from “non-existent” to “existent” one with a slight different note on Wednesday.

But that 'deflected note' is sufficient in itself to arise a new wave of criticism and resentment across the country especially by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), which (the latter) has comprised the 'Sethusamudram Issue' in its agenda last year.

It is being said that Congress is paying the price to Karunanidhi-led Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam for its support to Union government on trust vote as DMK from the very inception of the Project has been advocating for its completion.

During arguments between senior counsels, Fali S Nariman representing Government of Indian and the defence, the Centre through Nariman came with a different approach citing the reference of ninth-century Ramayana of Kamban and the Padma Purana, he said, “Ram was a superman. He constructed the Sethu, but after killing Ravana on his way back to India, he destroyed the Sethu with his magical bow.

“According to the scripture, Lord Rama himself broke the bridge into three parts in order to ensure that nobody could come from Sri Lanka. Anything that is broken is not a bridge. We can not worship something that has been destroyed.”

Nariman quoting Parasaran, the senior counsel appearing for one of the petitioners who argued that the integrity of the bridge could not be destroyed, said the same reference also says that Ram himself destroyed the bridge. If one, is relying on a document in support of faith, should rely on it fully or leave it.

Intervening him during the course of discussion, Justice Raveendran said: “We are not taking any evidence on the existence or otherwise of Ramar Sethu.”

Keeping aside faith the government's counsel put a just question: “Where was this faith when dredging was continuing uninterrupted for two years since 2005? Why did not a single objection, faith or otherwise, arise for two years? From where has this sudden awakening about the faith come?”

The Bench countering him said, “There were nine plans on the Sethusamudram Project in the 19th century and that was added further by five in the 20th century. But, none of the proposals talk about cutting through Ram Sethu. That means there was a conscious attempt to avoid dredging Ram Sethu may be because it was a matter of faith.”

The Bench taking middle path between “faith and logic” on the controversial issue pointed out, “If there was no other alternative to the present alignment, it would have been a different matter altogether. But when alternatives are available, why not accommodate both faith and logic? If the controversy can be rooted out by balancing the two, why not.”

The arguments will continue on Thursday.
