Bombay High Court sentences 3 years jail to Alistair Pereira
Sep 06: The Bombay High Court on Thursday awarded three years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 5 lakh fine to Alistair Pereira for the drunken driving case that took lives of seven pavement dwellers in Mumbai in November 12, 2006.
The Bombay High Court judge refuting the lower court’s judgement of a six months jail said that there is no sympathy for Pereira as it is a clear cut case of rash driving and hence deserves a stricter sentence.

Pereira after crushing seven people in Mumbai was charged by culpable homicide and found guilty of rash driving in drunken state. After the lower courts verdict that delivered a 6 months jail and Rs 5,000 fine, the Bombay High Court had issued a suo moto action against Alistair Pereira.
In the whole incident that took almost a year for the final verdict, was always in news with much criticism to the earlier lower court verdict. The incident on Carter Road Mumbai no only took seven lives including two children but also injured 14 others.
The High Court also criticised Mumbai police for its slackness in the whole investigation process and taking much time to submit its report. Considering all, the judgment though looks very less but at least leaves some hopes in our justice system.
Meanwhile, Jayesh Yagni, the lawyer of Pereira had said that they reserve the right to appeal in Supreme Court.
