25 missing after boat capsizes in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow, April 4 (IANS) More than 25 Hindu pilgrims returning from a temple were missing after the boat they were travelling in capsized in the Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh Saturday, an official said.

 

The accident took place near the Beejal ghat in Jalaun district, some 250 km from Lucknow, district magistrate P. Guru Prasad told IANS on telephone.

 

 

He said the exact number of devotees on the boat was yet to be ascertained.

 

 

'We have learnt that about 50 people, all from a village in Auraiya district, were on the boat when it capsized', Prasad said.

 

 

The pilgrims, from Sikinna village in Auraiya district, were returning after offering prayers at the Jalauni Mata temple in Jaluan.

 

 

'We have rescued 21 people and the operation is still on,' said police inspector Rajendra Pandey.
