Maoists in Jharkhand shun bullets for ballots

Ranchi, Sat, 04 Apr 2009 ANI

Ranchi, Apr 4 (ANI): Maoists, who shunned ballots and boycotted polls, have woken up to parliamentary democracy. They are seeking party tickets for the parliamentary elections in Jharkhand.

The Maoists have been ideologically opposed to parliamentary democracy.

However, they appear to have realised the futility of the gun-based struggle. They have developed faith in parliamentary democracy as an instrument to address people's grievances.

Top naxalite leader Kameshwar Baitha, who had polled 1.41 lakh votes to finish runner-up in the Palamau by-elections of 2007, is also ready to enter the poll fray.

A zonal commander of Communist Party of India (CPI) Maoist, Kameshwar is now in Kaimur Jail situated in Bihar.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has given the ticket to Baitha from the reserved Palamu Lok Sabha seat. His son Sanjay Baitha and his wife filed the nomination papers on his behalf.

"We have high hopes from this Lok Sabha elections because during the last elections, public supported us in winning and with the same faith and hope, public is again supporting us this time. We have the support of three parties," said Sanjay.

Meanwhile, Secretary of Communist Party of India (Maoist-Leninist) and a follower of Charu Majumdar and Kanu Sanyal, Anjani Kumar Pandey has filed his nomination papers as an independent candidate from the Ranchi constituency.

"Our party would like to expose falsehood of America. Our party wants that even if Congress party forms the government under the coalition of UPA or BJP forms the government, we will be against both of them," said Pandey.

The armed struggle has cost the state dear. Besides, the people are increasingly becoming weary of the agitation with no end in sight. By Girija Shankar Ojha(ANI)
