Ranchi, April 2 (IANS) Maoist guerrillas blew up a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader's house, a school building and a healthcare centre in Jharkhand's Chatra district, the police said Thursday.

About 50 rebels of the outlawed Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) barged into BJP leader Mahendra Yadav's house and asked his family members to run out. They then detonated bombs.

They also blew up a school building and an anganvadi (mother and child centre) building in the same village.

The police said Maoists are targeting government buildings like schools in rural Jharkhand ahead of the Lok Sabha elections so that security personnel cannnot be housed in them.

In the last three days, rebels have blown up six government buildings.

Maoist rebels have called for boycott of the polls and have warned voters of dire consequences if they cast their votes.

Maoists are active in 18 of the 24 districts of the state. About 1,450 people have been killed in Maoist-related violence in the last eight years.
