Ex-England goalie Shilton says Beckham should quit before 2010 World Cup

London, July 24 (ANI): Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton has said that David Beckham should quit before he is told to go.

Shilton believes that if Beckham is included in the squad for the next World Cup, the team will come a cropper.

According to the Daily Express, Beckham is chasing Shilton's record of 125 caps - and aims to start for Fabio Capello's men in the 2010 finals.

Shilton believes Beckham, 33, doesn't have the legs to keep his place in the England team and warned Capello against sticking with him.

Shilton said: "I wouldn't like him to break my record. I would be the first to congratulate him if he did, because for an outfield player to win that many caps in the modern game would be fantastic. But I don't think he can.

"I'm sure he's got a role to play for England in the near future. But if we haven't got anyone who can take his place then we are going to be struggling at the next World Cup," he added.

"He's still a great player, but if you can't put the legs on a player then you've a problem," Shilton said.

Beckham has already won 102 caps for his country. (ANI)
